| Composting Hints and Tips |
|
If you are having problems with creating good compost - try
the following
1. Use a good mix of materials - don't just use grass cuttings,
add in other material such as plant prunings and annual weeds.
Add shredded material as well.
2. Turn it over! Fill you compost bin to the top then tip
or dig it out and then throw it all back in. This will mix
up the material and add in air, both important to the decompostion
process.
3. Use an accerator. You can either buy these or a low tech
solution is to mix in some fresh horse manure.
4. Make sure the compost is wet enough - if it feels dry,
especially around the edges, add water (rain water will do)
5. If it is too wet, add some dry material such as straw or
shreded newspaper.
6. Cover - once your bin is full and has been turned over,
put some sort of cover over it (a piece if old carpet is adequate).
7. Give it time - it will all rot eventually!
