| Managing your home energy use |
|
Are your electricity gas and oil bills expenses that you
pay without a another thought? Or do your take an active interest
in making sure that energy is a controlled cost? There is
much you can do to reduce your energy bills and do something
for the environment today.
Five steps to better energy efficiency:
- Monitor your use - start by reading your electricity and
gas meters regularly. Start every day for a week, then weekly
and get a feel for how much you use. Then you can see if
your efforts are making a difference
- Switch it off! In many homes electrical appliances are
left on day and night. Don't the TV on standby; unplug your
mobile phone charger when not in use; switch off your cooker
hob at the wall; watch for fluorescent lights - they are
efficient but don't leave them on continually.
- Use low energy bulbs when possible, there are a wide range
of bulb sizes for all lamp fittings see Ebulb
for a selection or your local supermarket.
- Insulate - studies carried out by CRed
(the Community Carbon Reduction Programme) show that 85%
of homes aren't insulated properly. Contact the Energy
Saving Trust for help and grants etc. Remember you should
have 8inches of insulation in your roof. Having it professionally
fitted can be cheaper than DIY
- Know what appliances uses the most energy and use them
wisely - keep fridges well ventilated; defrost freezers
regularly; don't leave hair straighteners on unnecessarily;
switch off high wattage spot lighter etc when not really
needed.
