What is 'organic food'?

All food is 'organic' in as much as it has 'organic' origins. Usually, when food is described as organic it means that it has been grown without the use of artificial fertilizer and pesticides. Organically produced meat means that livestock is not routinely treated with antibiotics and other drugs that are necessary when intensive farming is used.

There are many benefits to eating organic food. Firstly, you can be sure of getting a fresh product, that isn't contaminated by chemicals. Also you can be sure of avoiding GM foods. Many people believe that organic food tastes better and it has been proven that it is higher in nutrients. Wildlife benefits from organic production methods. As pesticides and other chemicals are avoided, wildlife also benefits. Farming methods in the past have had a serious impact on habitats leading to declines in many of our native species of wild birds and other creatures. However, now the tide is turning as it has been realised that quality and sustainability of produce is as important to the consumer as price.

You can often buy a range of organic produce at your local supermarket but buying from small retailers is more sustainable.
